Cambodia entered the darkest time of her history during the post-Angkor era when it was, at the same time, marked by the rise of the Siamese State in the West and the Viet State in the Northeast. The constant infightings between the royal descendants and their reliance on neighbors for power resulted in an erosion of Cambodian sovereignty and losses of land. During some short periods of time in this era, no king was on the throne and it almost seemed that Cambodia was no longer in existence.
